Course Information
The Chester Step Test (CST) is a staged aerobic fitness assessment commonly used across the offshore and wind industries to evaluate an individual’s physical readiness for demanding roles. It forms a critical component of the OGUK Offshore Medical and is also required by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) for wind turbine technicians. The test involves stepping to a set rhythm while heart rate and perceived exertion are monitored at each stage. The test continues until either your heart rate exceeds 80% of your maximum, or your RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) goes above 14. The results are then reviewed by an occupational health professional to determine fitness for work.

The Chester Step Test is used to assess aerobic fitness levels and is often required as part of offshore medicals (e.g., OGUK) or wind turbine industry requirements (GWO). It helps ensure individuals can meet the physical demands of working in offshore and remote environments.
The test is conducted in stages, with increasing stepping rates (starting at 15 steps/min). After each 2-minute stage, your heart rate and RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) are recorded. If both remain below safe limits (80% of your max heart rate and RPE below 14), you proceed to the next stage. The test stops when either threshold is exceeded.
The test involves a low step platform, heart rate monitor, RPE chart, and CST software to track performance. You'll also receive a demonstration before beginning the test.
Yes. The Chester Step Test is a mandatory requirement for those completing the OGUK Offshore Medical and for workers in the wind energy sector (as per GWO standards). It confirms you have the minimum level of aerobic fitness needed to perform your role safely.
