Course Information
The Fit to Train Medical is a mandatory health assessment for individuals undertaking OPITO-approved offshore training that involves in-water Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) exercises. This quick but essential check ensures that delegates are physically and medically fit to safely participate in CA-EBS training and other physically demanding offshore courses.
The assessment includes a review of the delegate’s medical history and, where necessary, a physical exam or spirometry test (subject to additional charges). Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a Fit to Train certificate, confirming their capability to proceed with in-water survival training. This certificate is recognised as part of the OGUK medical compliance process.

This medical is required for:
Delegates attending OPITO HUET with CA-EBS training
Individuals working in offshore roles involving compressed air escape systems
New entrants to the oil & gas or offshore renewables industries
It is especially relevant for those who do not yet hold a valid OGUK medical certificate with Fit to Train included.
The medical assessment consists of:
Completion of the official CA-EBS fitness questionnaire
Consultation with a registered OGUK doctor
If needed: a physical examination or spirometry test (additional charges may apply)
The goal is to ensure delegates are not at risk when exposed to physical stressors during in-water CA-EBS training.
Due to the physical nature of the training linked to this assessment, all delegates must complete a medical self-screening form prior to the appointment. This confirms their ability to safely take part in the associated survival courses.
In offshore environments, personal safety is non-negotiable. The Fit to Train Medical helps identify any health issues that could compromise a delegate’s ability to complete in-water survival training safely. This assessment is a critical step before undertaking OPITO CA-EBS training and forms part of the broader commitment to health, safety, and performance in high-risk industries.
